Des Moines Downtown market opened May 5, 2012. A crowd of 40,000 welcomed back vendors. Many vendors expected to sell out prior to closing time. A farm in southern Iowa is raising fresh water talipa, which is selling at a fast pace. It's amazing what you can find at a mid-west farmers market.
The Iowa Farmer Today publication issued May 5th reports on the economic impact of organic farming. In 2010, organic farm industry generated more than 500,000 American jobs. In 2011, the US organic market surpassed $31 billion for the first time.
Formation of New Farmers Market Advisory Group:
Ames Robb, VT EBT Director and I have worked for the past 4 months to organize this new group. With a strong state focus, the goal is to help states increase SNAP & WIC EBT access at farmers markets. For more information, please contact me. May 10th is the next meeting. The key agenda item is a report from Michigan WIC staff and their partners on their farmers market project involving CVV and iPhone technology.
