Iowa Farmers Market Project Breaks $ 1 Million in Sales!
As an Iowa farmer and a participant in the EBT Wireless Project, I closely follow the growth of this project. There are approximately 165 Iowa farmers who participate in the EBT project. These farmers are provided a wireless device from DHS to use at markets or on their farm. They are able to accept SNAP EBT, debit, and credit cards.The big news is that total sales were $1,002,548 compared to $869,401 in 2010. That is an increase of over 15% SNAP EBT sales in 2011 were $85,282 compared to $71,782 in 2010, an increase of almost 19%.The number of EBT transactions increased 12.5%
This data demonstrates the need to help farmers and farmers markets. By using wireless technology, farmers can significantly increase their gross sales by accepting SNAP EBT, debit and credit cards. Plus, when farmers have the ability to accept SNAP EBT, low-income families obtain access to farmers markets and have the ability to purchase fresh, locally grown with their SNAP benefits. In 2011, only an estimated 25% of markets in the US can accept EBT. Let's work together to increase access to fresh, locally-grown produce for SNAP and WIC EBT families!
